Bonus Essay

One of the first essays I wrote for Days Of The Underground was entitled 'Welcome To The Future' and subtitled 'The apocalypse in popular culture - science fiction on screen in the 1970s.'

While some of its ideas and words were subsequently used in the 'New Worlds And Dangerous Visions' essay, it soon became clear that it was too tangential to the rest of the book to appear as a standalone piece.

However, while there's not much Hawkwind in it, I think it might be an enjoyable read for fans of the 1970s' determinedly gloomy take on science fiction. Click on the image below to read it.

Days Of The Underground is a decade-long trip into the music of Hawkwind. It explores the ideas and concepts that fuelled the band during their classic 1970s period and speaks to the crew that manned the ship.
